Midget Green Team
Hamden 6   West Haven 3     Win
Hamden 3   West Hartford 4 Loss
The Hamden Midget Green Team had a good weekend of games heading into next week’s Rhode Island tournament. Hamden beat West Haven in a penalty filled game 6-3 and lost a tough one to West Hartford 4-3.
The West Haven game was chippy from the beginning. It seemed like the Green Dragons played most of the first period short-handed. Yet, on a fine play by Dan Cusano the team went up 1-0 as the tough senior centerman scored an unassisted, short handed goal.
AJ Gemmel, John Teulings, and RJ Ugolik were playing well on defense holding down the fort. Scotty Walsh was exhibiting his usual hustle and fine passing on the offensive side of the ice.
Senior High School Co-Captain Mike Pierne exited the game early as did Pat McGovern.   The two talented forwards are high powered scorers and were lost to the Greenies as a result of transgressions that saw them take a premature exit to the West Haven game. As a result they were lost for Sunday’s game as well which did not help the team’s cause at the Trinity College Rink.
CJ Carignan made the West Haven game 2-0 in the Second Period on a fine play by defenseman Dan Wheeler who picked up an assist on the play. Nick Castaldi also had an assist on this goal. McGovern made it 3-0 before the curtain came down on him. This was a pretty goal as linemate Mike Berezecky did the bull work behind the net to feed the puck to Joey Coughlin at the left circle and Coughlin rifled a pass to the hard charging McGovern on the right who promptly fired the puck into the net.
The Blue Devils came back to make it 3-2 including a terrible goal that the Hamden squad allowed with just thirty four seconds left in the second period. Hard hitting defenseman, Steven Sorrentino got that goal back early in the Third Period with a nice shot from just inside the blue line. Matt Morgan and Mark Fracasso had assists on the play.
PJ Vakos, who has been playing hard all season long, then was rewarded for his fine play with a roof top special to make it 5-2. His goal, a short handed beauty, was set up by the hustle of Carignan who beat a defender for the puck down low and hit Vakos with a pass while falling down.
Jimmy Burt finished Hamden’s scoring banging home a rebound off a Dave Findley shot to make it 6-2. Findley and Cusano picked up assists on that goal. West Haven scored late to end the game at 6-3.
Hamden traveled north early Sunday morning and seemed to slumber their way through the first period finding them in an early 2-0 hole. Goals by Coughlin and Burt tied the game late in the first period.  Morgan scored in the Third Period to knot the game at 3-3 but the opponents scored late on Anthony Avitable and the visitors left on the short end of a 4-3 score.
The team is coached by Anthony Carangelo, Dan Vigliotti and Jim Miller. Hamden travels to Warwick, Rhode Island this weekend for a Columbus Day Weekend Tournament.
