Midget Green Team
Hamden 9   Simsbury 1 Win
Hamden 5   Darien 3 Win
The Hamden Midget Green Team had a marvelous weekend trouncing Simsbury 9-1 at home and beating a tough Darien team on the road 5-3. Hamden, 4-2 on the season, was led in the Simsbury game by Danny Cusano and Pat McGovern who had two goals each. One of Cusano’s goals was an absolute beauty as was a PJ Vakos goal in the game.
Joey Coughlin, CJ Carignan, Dave Findley and Matt Morgan also scored for the team. It was Morgan’s first game back after suffering a head injury in the Bolton game a few weeks ago during the Cromwell Tournament and Coughlin’s first game of the year after recovering from an ankle injury. Scott Walsh, Jim Burt, Steve Sorrentino, and AJ Gemmell also had outstanding games for Hamden. Carl Zukunft made twenty saves on twenty one shots in net for the home team.
Hamden was then off to play the powerful Darien team at the Darien Ice Center. Hamden came out fast but was thwarted by the fine play of the Darien goalie. Hamden’s Anthony Avitable was just as stellar in net for the Green Machine. Hard skating winger, Dave Findley got Hamden on the board with just three minutes to play in the first period on a fine rush, deke and backhanded score to make it 1-0 Hamden.
Findley, the hardest hitting forward on the team, stole the puck in center ice, faked his way past one defender and then made a sweet move against the goalie to score. “It was a brilliant play,” said Dave Castaldi a youth hockey coach in town. “The kid hustles all the time and it was nice to see him bury that puck in the net.”
Hamden made it 2-1 when defenseman Nick Castaldi sent a Tim Wakefield-like knuckle ball towards the net that made it past the Darien goalie mid way through the second period. Mark Fracasso had an assist on the play. Dan Wheeler and RJ Ugolik had outstanding games on defense.
Fracasso picked up another assist when he led a charge down the left side of the ice blowing by a defender to the outside and hitting Cusano with a nice pass at the right circle. The crafty winger deftly sent a back handed pass to hard charging Mike Berezecky in the slot and the rugged winger rifled a shot over the goalie’s left shoulder to make it 3-1 Hamden with only eleven minutes left in the game.
Vakos, Pierne, Carignan, and Burt along with defensemen Wheeler and Sorrentino and Ugolik and Teulings did great jobs while Hamden was shorthanded.
Darien would not give up. They stormed back to make it 3-3 with a little over three minutes to go. John Teulings, Mike Pierne and “Scoring Machine” Morgan had a high energy shift that resulted in Morgan scoring the game winner. Teulings and Pierne has assists on the play as the “Trash Man” scored in tight after finding the puck in a scrum of players just outside the crease.
PJ Vakos then scored an empty netter that iced the hard fought victory for the Hamden team.
The team is coached by Anthony Carangelo, Dan Vigliotti and Jim Miller. Hamden’s next two home games are this Thursday at 8:30 PM v. Wallingford and this Sunday at 12:00 noon against the powerful Mid-Fairfield team. Admission is free at the Lou Astorino Rink on Mix Avenue in Hamden.
